Possibly Mitchell Ray
Fine Old One-egg Nantucket Lightship Basket
Oak or maple, and rattan
Circa 1930
This tiny, "One-egger" basket was made in Nantucket, Massachusetts in the early part of the Twentieth Century.
Mitchell Ray (1880-1956) and Sherwin Boyer (1907-1964) were both known for making multiple examples of this
style. This particular basket features a D-shaped handle that flares and widens at the center of the
horizontal segment, a characteristic of Ray's work. For similar examples see The Lightship Baskets
of Nantucket: A Continuing Craft by David H. Wood, Curator, the Nantucket Historical Association, 1994.
